Across State Lines: Gautrat Joins Newcastle on Loan

Published

on

Transfer windows around the world continue to move closer to closing, or closing for the summer transfer window. Movement among former Kansas City players has slowed at this point, but former Kansas City Current midfielder, Morgan Gautrat, is on the move. Gautrat this week moved to Newcastle United WFC in England’s Women’s Super League 2, the second division in England. The move is a loan deal from her current club, the Orlando Pride, where she’d spent the last year and a half. In the announcement of her loan move Gautrat announced that she was retiring from NWSL play, ending her career in the US top league that had started in 2015 with the Houston Dash.

Here’s the rest of this week’s update.

I didn’t understand it when I saw the news. How does one retire from NWSL play? If they are loaned out, fine. But to retire and immediately sign elsewhere? It seems the team should have just called it a loan.

I’ve heard of retiring from National Team play and still playing for a club, but this was a new one.

That is a weird combination of statements. Maybe has to do with pension from NWSL or something in that realm?
