Sporting KC will “for sure” sign a new player this summer
“There will be somebody signed in this window for sure.”
Peter Vermes confirmed last week he fully expects Sporting KC to sign at least one player this summer during the MLS Transfer Window. The club’s real roster flexibility for the coming rebuild – as they’ve made clear recently – won’t come until the end of the season. But it does appear we can expect some movement from Sporting KC soon.
“There will be somebody signed in this window for sure.”
Ahead of Sporting KC’s match with St. Louis City, Peter Vermes responded to a question from KC Soccer Journal’s own Jimmy Mack on potential reinforcements.
Fans probably shouldn’t expect a major signing which will change the course of the season, but a new face in the lineup will be a breath of fresh air.
“We’re progressing forward in a meaningful way on a couple situations.”
This week’s Shade of Blue is talking about what this might mean for the upcoming Leagues Cup, US Open Cup Semifinal, and the remainder of the MLS season for Sporting KC. Plus, the guys cover the disappointing draw with sT. lOuIs CiTy sC over the weekend.

How about signing a new manager? We’ve spent good money on players and Vermes can’t seem to get much out of them. I see that as a problem with Vermes and not the players. If we are not going to replace our feckless and ineffective manager then why spend money on new players?
What player of talent will want to come to the center of the United States and play for a team that is always in the hunt for last. Thanks to Peter Vermes, SKC seems to be have become a place where careers go to die.
3 negatives seems harsh. Did someone let A&W vote three times?
Lol, present.
blame ar_jhawk for beetlejuicing me here. This manager got a ton out of most of these same dudes just last year. For 70% of the year he got them to put up the best results in their conference, get out of the toughest group in League’s Cup despite our most effective offensive weapon at the time losing his mind in the first game and missing the rest of the tournament, and destroyed the #1 seed in the playoffs before getting refereed out of a conference final appearance. The year before the roster was dramatically different due to injuries and signings and whatnot and yes, that team sucked, but the year before that this manager took a team with no depth whatsoever to a place where 1st in their division was attainable on the last game of the season.
Point is: this “feckless and ineffective manager” has proven multiple times, as recently as last year, that he can get a lot out of a poorly constructed roster and he has always gotten a lot out of even decently constructed rosters. He might not always get a lot out of a poorly constructed roster, but he can. A lot of good managers can’t. And I don’t think that any manager in the world will always get a lot out of a poorly constructed roster and a lot of good managers struggle at times to get good results out of a decent roster.
Point is: Vermes isn’t the problem. He’s not the best manager in the world and we could probably convince someone better to come here but that’s not a need because Vermes can and usually does win, especially when the roster is even decently constructed. The dude who constructed the rosters with no depth and questionable quality in too many spots over the past half decade + was fired, so that is problem largely solved.
And the last bit “always in the hunt for last.” Literally one time in the last 15 seasons have they been in the hunt for last and that’s this year and even that is hyperbole since they’re 10 points clear of last right now. They’re far more often in the hunt for first than last.
I will say the last game was poorly managed from my perspective (salloi had no business staying on), I also do not know any behind the scenes info to drive the lack of subs or anything else.
But, the guy that constructed the roster is Vermes. Everyone knows this. We all just can’t admit it.
Only rebuttal to the PV love fest. I don’t care who built the roster or what year it was. He runs the starting 11 into the ground every year. None of the back ups see enough playing time to be able to sub late in the year and be effective.
Last season every bad game was blamed on Pulido and Kinda being hurt. We now know, only Gadi Kinda had an injury that effected the squad. Pulido has done nothing more this year than when he was on the bench injured last year. Just stealing minutes from developing forwards who actually try. Not being able to score one goal against a weak Houston side in the playoffs last year, terrible.
I just want the USOC. Hope whatever signing brought in, is in shape and ready to play. I gave up on the playoffs this year. We’re in about the same position as Miami last year. Messi couldn’t get SKC to the playoffs at this point.
The Cauldron is dead, in my opinion. It is without leadership and couldn’t even dare to respond to G.W. hiring. The chants are stale. The capo looks like a kids camp counselor but not in a good way. They do the same chant and have a bad recent habit of increasing the tempo until you can’t understand anything.
The capos also cannot pick a key for the life of them. Same with the new trombone players. It drives me fucking nuts.
I feel like it died a lot last year when people organically were calling for vermes out, causing arguing and then homeboy started squaring up against kids.
I dunno what the answer would be, but shit, they have so many opportunities for team-specific taunts/chants that they refuse to even entertain.
You used to never be able to hear the opposing teams announcements over the “who the hell are you” chant.
St. Louis match:
Definite second yellow on STL.
Salloi did some cute things, but he can’t find a result. Vargas and Afrifa should have seen the field as they have proven to get more results than salloi.
Pulido did something. That statement isn’t the win you think it is. He is the highest paid player and we are supposes to be excited when he does the minimum? His underlying stats do not paint a picture of an impact player.
Honestly, the “for sure signing” made me start looking up former SKC players still in MLS or lower and available. Any old signing isn’t a win…splash or impact signing is the only thing that will get people excited about this team for the rest of 24.
Has Zusi officially retired?
