Kansas City:
The Kansas City Current could not have hoped for a better start to the 2024 season. Vlatko and Co. successfully opened CPKC Stadium with a win for their home and season opener against one of the best teams in the league the last few seasons. Then they followed that up with a come from behind win on the road against the best team in the league in 2023.
The Current return home to their brand new stadium on Saturday looking to continue their stellar start. The match will be nationally televised for the second time in three matches. This weekend the game to be found on ESPN.
Kansas City has had seven different players score a goal in their first two matches. That is the most in NWSL history.

It is obvious to say that his team has options when it comes to scoring goals. Vanessa DiBernardo, Ellie Wheeler, Bia Zaneratto, Kristen Hamilton and Alex Pffiefer all scored in the first game of the season. Izzy Rodriguez and Lo’eau LaBonta added goals last weekend.
One downfall is that while the Current have been great at scoring goals, they have also given up five goals in the first two matches. Four to the Thorns and one to the Wave. That will be something that the defense will look to shore up this weekend against Angel City. The trusty hands of AD Franch in goal were able to keep San Diego from tying up the match last weekend and the team will need her again on Saturday.

Angel City FC:
On the other end of the goal scoring spectrum, Angel City FC has only scored one goal in their first two matches. Their first game was a 0-1 loss at home to new kids on the block, Bay FC. They followed that match with a 1-1 draw at Orlando. Their only goal came off of a penalty kick taken by Claire Emslie. Emslie has been joined by Alyssa Thompson, Sydney Leroux and Messiah Bright on the front line in the two matches. They have had trouble finishing opportunities, but those are all proven goal scorers that will be itching to get their first goal of the season in Kansas City.
Angel City goalkeeper, Angelina Anderson, and her back line will look to continue their stingy defense that has allowed only two goals in their two matches. Sarah Gordon, Paige Nielsen, Mary Alice Vignola and team captain Ali Riley will look to continue with what they have been doing as they try to stop Kansas City’s power house goal scoring attack.
Prediction:
Kansas City will continue to be hyped to be in front of their home crowd in their own brand new stadium. While the hype won’t be quite as high for the second game at CPKC Stadium, the Current will continue their hot streak. I do worry a bit about the KC defense giving up goals. Angel City just might be able to grab a couple of goals. However, I think that the goal scoring power will be too much for the lackluster goal scoring Angel City offense and the Current stay unbeaten.
2-1 KC win
