The Kansas City Current made another move today when they completed a trade with the Portland Thorns. Alexa Spaanstra has been traded to Portland. The Current will receive $40,000 ($15,000 allocation, $25,000 intra-league transfer funds) in exchange from Portland.

“Lex has been a great player for this club and a fantastic teammate for everyone here,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski via press release. “We are sad to see her go, but as we look to do what is right for the player we wish her nothing but the best with her next step.”

The Michigan native was a standout player for the Virginia Cavaliers before being drafted with Kansas City’s second first-round pick (10th overall) in the 2023 NWSL Draft. As a rookie, Spaanstra made fifteen appearances for the Current. She came on strong at the end of the season, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist.

Spaanstra has battled for playing time on a stacked Kansas City Current squad this season. She has primarily played when injuries or international duty left the Current short-handed or giving players time off during the summer tournaments. Understandably, Spaanstra wanted to move where she might get more time and also respectful of the player’s wishes by the Current.

Kansas City had already played Portland twice this season so would not face Spaanstra again unless the two sides meet in the playoffs. Kansas City is in second place with a 10-1-5 record while Portland is in fifth with at 8-5-3. The Thorns are a strong team and Spaanstra will give them more depth and options on the forward line.

The Current are fresh off winning the local edition of the Women’s Cup and advancing to the final of the Summer Cup. They next go on the road to face the Washington Spirit on August 25th.
