On Friday, the Kansas City Current announced a new signing as they are in the midst of a torrid run through the NWSL and various summer competitions. Mwanalima Adam Jereko, or more simply Jereko, will join the club on a contract through the end of 2025, with an option for 2026.

“I can’t wait to get to Kansas City and play for the Current,” said Jereko. “The organization has been incredible with me, and I am very excited to be part of this club.”

“Jereko is an exciting player that will be a great fit here,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “Her enthusiasm, skill and work ethic are exactly what we are looking for as we get back into the regular season.”

Jereko went pro at just 17-years-old and is now approaching her 27th birthday this September. A native of Kenya, she debuted with Mombasa Olympic ladies while still in high school before joining Thika Queens FC in the Kenyan Premier League. In 2021 she was the top scorer in the entire league and led her team to an undefeated season.

That earned her a move to Hakkarigücü Spor of the Turkish Super League where she would score in 11 of her first 17 games. Last season, she scored 23 times and was the captain of her team.

More About Jereko

The story the Current released refers to Jereko as a midfielder at times and a striker at others. In the highlight package below, she seems to be in the midfield and out wide at times. She can also be seen wearing the captain’s armband frequently, which is a strong indication of her leadership.

The KC Current making a signing out of Africa will no doubt draw comparisons to star attacker Temwa Chawinga. It remains to be seen what sort of an impact Jereko will fill. With the team recently losing attacker Claire Lavogez, there should be minutes available off the bench to start making an immediate impact.

How Jereko responds to coming to the NWSL, the best women’s soccer league in the world, will go a long way to showing what her impact will be in 2024 and beyond.

Other KC Current Updates

Daniel Sperry of the KC Star also reports that the Current have released midfielder Allie Long from her short-term injury-replacement contract. Long was released alongside National Team replacement players Grace Bahr and Sabrina Weinman.

With Alex Pfeiffer, Gabby Robinson and Mallory Weber on the season ending injury list and Sophie Braun out on loan, the Current have one available roster spot they can fill during this transfer window. Weber has been out injured since an April 2023 ACL tear but could be nearing a return.

Whether it’s that, or another signing, I don’t imagine the Current will stand pat but instead will look to continue improving their squad. Look for more news in the coming week.
