This is the first matchup between these two clubs for 2023, and they will again face each other in Kansas City for a regular season game on Saturday. The Current have yet to defeat Louisville  in the Challenge Cup, going 0-1-1 in 2022.
The Current come into their second game of the Challenge Cup leading the top of the Central Division after a  a 2-0 victory versus the Houston Dash. It was a much-needed win as the club began 2023 with three consecutive losses and began a three-game winning streak across all competitions.
But Kansas City has again fallen to consecutive losses since that winning streaking, falling to Angel City FC and San Diego, and they will again need to bounce back if they hope to turn their 2023 season around at a important time.
On a good note, Kansas City is unbeaten in its last five road Challenge Cup matches, winning three and drawing two, with the last three of those all being wins. That is tied for the longest road win streak in the Challenge Cup history. The OL Reign is the other team with the same record set in the 2021 and 2022 Challenge Cups.
