The Kansas City Current’s remarkable season just received one more notable element: their home stadium, CPKC, has been selected to host the NWSL Championship match on Saturday, November 23, 2024. This will be a fitting conclusion to the stadium’s inaugural year in existence–a year in which it became the first ever stadium built for a women’s professional team in the world.

Much like other leagues (the Champions League in Europe, the Super Bowl for the NFL), the NWSL selects the host venue for its championship match not based on the participants, but on more of a rotating schedule among a handful of “worthy” sites. Last season’s title match was played between Gotham and Seattle in San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium. The year before that, the Current met the Thorns in the DC at Audi Field.

This year? There were rumors that Kansas City would be rewarded for the first of its kind investment into the women’s game and those rumors were validated by this morning’s announcement.

Could the Current play a “home” game for the title? It’s absolutely a possibility. Heading into this weekend massive match with the Orlando Pride, KC sits in first place and is undefeated on the season. Their attack is on a record-setting pace for goals and their defense has slowly started to round into form, eliminating many of the “soft” or late goals that have caused frustration.

The opportunity to conclude this already magical season with a Championship Match appearance (and win!) on home soil certainly would put the finishing touches on this fairy tale year for team from the Soccer Capital of America. Having sold out every match thus far, there is already discussion of expanding CPKC’s seating capacity within the next few years. Regardless, though, should the Red and Teal stake a claim to a spot in the Championship Match, there won’t be an empty seat in the house and that spot on the banks of the Missouri will be rocking.

This is such great news for KC and the Current. Well deserved proof that if you build it they WILL come. The only negative is that they probably won’t be in a regular rotation for it with “only” 11,500 seats.
