Across State Lines: Busio, Venezia Earn Promotion to Serie A

Published

on

Gianluca Busio

As the European seasons wind down for the year the final promotion spots in different leagues are being decided. In Italy this past week the final of their promotion playoff for the third and final promotion spot in Serie A was decided for the 2024-2025 season. Former Sporting KC midfielder, Gianluca Busio helped Venezia FC earn promotion back to Serie A as they took down US Cremonese 1-0 in the series, drawing the away leg 0-0 before winning the home leg 1-0. Busio had an assist on the winning goal for Venezia in the game before he came off the field with an apparent injury around the hour mark. Venezia will now return to Serie A, where the club played when Busio made his move from Sporting to Venezia.

I was up at 5:15 this morning to watch TST and so far it has not disappointed!  Fun, fast-paced matches with too many great names to watch and keep track of. I grew up down the road from Cary and am kicking myself for not taking the trip this year.

I don’t remember the last time I enjoyed watching soccer this much… I don’t even care that some of my teams didn’t start off strong.

Kat

After this morning I’m stoked for Sneaky Fox vs Kwik Goal in round 2!

Kat

Afternoon observations: never thought I’d see Zus at “keeper”, and can confirm the underlying fear of Roger getting carded is still alive and well even in a tourney like this.

That would be peak Roger to get suspended for yellow card accumulation in this tournament.

Kat

It certainly would, though I’d put my money on Brek Shea and others for that instead! I just hope Wrexham (Roger) and Zala (Sapong, Zusi, and Lee Nguyen (former current assistant coach)) get out of their groups. At least Jimmy and Kwik Goal look to be sitting pretty. Though I’m also a bit partial to Sneaky Fox because my dog’s namesake is on the team.

Kat

I am deceased at Zala practically being unable to buy a goal (looking at you, Justin Meram). It was fun watching Zus coming up clutch as the keeper in 2v2 to buy time, maybe they’ll manage to squeak through to the round of 32 but I’m not holding my breath. They need to follow the lead of other teams and have a better amalgamation of playing styles/experience next year.

I know I’m mostly just shouting into the KCSJ void at this point, but I really hope anyone else on the SKC struggle bus can catch a TST match or two this weekend. It’s been really fun and exciting, giving me a way to enjoy watching soccer again. I hope it can for you guys, too.

Anyway, back to lurking 🙂

I lied. I’m back… buckle up, buckaroos!

First and foremost, I love that there is an entire women’s division this year, and Michelle Akers is, has, and always will be mother.

Definitely bummed that Kwik Goal went out so quick (zing!) after dominating their group… it was a real treat seeing Seb play again. So, I’m pouring one out for the team formerly known as Conrad & Beasley United.

The Wrexham Men had an easier go of it today but I think they are in for a challenge tomorrow against the Reggae Rovers who have been excellent and, imo, one of the most fun to watch all tourney.

I honestly thought this was Nani FC’s game to lose and was surprised it was so close. Sneaky Fox snuck (zing! x2) past Zala as the last wild card team into the round of 32, so I’m not shedding too many tears over them crashing out given they were pretty disjoined from the jump despite the big names (like Zala they need to incorporate some other skill sets and experience for success). Though, my pup and I will always have a soft spot for Mix Diskerud. Brad, Sacha, and Nicky are chill, too, especially diffusing those halftime temper tantrums. Poor Sacha after the final whistle, though!

Everything I know about Pat Mcafee is against my will from watching this tournament. Do not want more.

Closing thought: What about a TZT: The Zlatan Tournament. 7 v Zlatan, and Zlatan always wins no matter the score. Just being in his presence is reward enough.

Kat

Welp, I was right and Wrexham truly were no match for the Rovers. Poor Roger with the own goal.

Kat

Nani FC takes out last year’s champs in the semis! Drew Ruggles won with Newtown last year, just to take them out to possibly win with Nani this year. This tourney is so @&$!%#%* fun!
