Sporting Kansas City Release Dany Rosero

Let’s take a look at what this move means for Sporting KC for this year, and their roster build heading into 2026.

On Thursday, Sporting Kansas City made a mildly surprising announcement that they were waiving center back Dany Rosero.

A closer look shows maybe it’s not all that surprising. The Colombian defender had just five appearances (only two starts) during the 2025 season, despite Sporting KC being 24 games into the season. It’s a career low for Rosero who has been a regular starter for much of his career.

Dany Rosero originally joined Sporting KC at the beginning of the 2023 season after Kortne Ford had gone down with a season ending injury. His original contract went through 2025 with an option for the club to extend it through 2026.

The decision to move on from Rosero comes just after Sporting KC acquired another center back, Alan Montes, on loan from Liga MX side Necaxa.

With Montes in the fold, the center back room was suddenly very crowded. Jansen Miller, a 2025 first round draft pick, has been the most prolific of the CBs on the roster. He’s fourth on the team in minutes (1,845). Next to Miller has been a rotating cast. Robert Voloder has probably played the best before requiring surgery on his clavicle. He recently returned from injury. Joaquin Fernandez is as healthy as he’s been all year. And the team has 17-year-old Homegrown rookie, Ian James. Not to mention Jacob Bartlett can slide into CB at a pinch.

There simply aren’t any minutes for Dany Rosero, who has struggled with his health since 2024.

With Sporting KC waiving him, it’s probably best for both sides. It seems highly unlikely that Rosero was going to have his option picked up in 2026. Now he has a chance to catch on with a club somewhere else in the world as many leagues are just getting their seasons underway. On SKC’s side, any minutes Rosero would have taken can go to a younger player who is likely to be with the team beyond this season. Or at least to someone like Montes or Voloder who are trying to earn a deal beyond this year.

This move leaves Sporting KC with 25 players on their roster. The move doesn’t free up an international roster spot, as Rosero had his green card. The team still has two open international roster spots and Sporting Director Mike Burns expects them to be active in the summer transfer window which is still open for two more weeks.

I had an irrational liking for Rosero. He was inconsistent but I felt like he played with a fire that sometimes felt lacking in the last few seasons. He was dangerous (at both ends of the field) and interesting. I wish him success elsewhere.

Gumby

He played with a fire, unless he was playing with complete and utter apathy. Dude was so hot and cold it made no sense.

Something I have come to appreciate with PV being gone. It is nice to hear from Burns on the plan. I appreciate him being honest that things did not work with a couple of players. I appreciate that they are working on getting 1-2 more this window.

I do wonder how the coach search is going. Im not really sold on KV. I do feel the team is playing a bit more unified. But overall it seems a new coach is a must for the 2026 season, IMO.

A new manager is a mixed bag. We aren’t playing with Lego’s. Like you, I’m totally happy to see the back of PV. I do think that KZ is a major improvement. I originally wanted someone from the outside, WAY OUTSIDE. Now I’m happy to give him a chance with a short leash and two season.

We need to move on from the Wiz and stop living in the past. If KZ is not the man then rebuild from the outside soup to nuts.

May he find a spot elsewhere. SKC is in a pickle and things have to change. He might be better off as I’m not sure what SKC wants to look like in the future. At least PV was given his option to go elsewhere.

Questionmark

I agree that Voloder was playing well before his injury. If he comes back and picks up where he left off, and Montes fits in, our CB stable should be strong enough that we could soon say goodbye to Fernandez and his high $$.
