Across State Lines: Barnhart Announces Retirement

One of the original FC Kansas City players has called time on their playing career as Nicole Barnhart announced her retirement this past week. Barnhart played professionally in the United States for 16 years, playing in both the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). When the NWSL launched in 2013, Barnhart was allocated to FCKC. For the entire existence of FCKC, Barnhart was the club’s number one goalkeeper. When FCKC moved to Utah, Barnhart was the club’s all time leader in games, starts, and minutes. She returned to KC when the Utah Royals’ franchise rights moved to KC and the team that eventually became the Current.  Only this past year did Lo LaBonta pass her for those categories among KC NWSL teams with the KC Current. Her 44 league wins with FCKC and the KC Current will take a while to top, especially with the Current rebuilding their goalkeeper room. She also made 54 appearances for the US national team during her playing career. Congratulations to Barnhart on a long, successful career.

Also this week, former Sporting KC midfielder, Ilie Sanchez has a new club as he has signed with Austin FC ahead of the 2025 MLS season. Here’s the rest of this week’s update.
